NurtureShock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman: 10 Surprising Lessons for Smarter, Kinder Parenting

Introduction

Hey friends! Today, I want to share some surprising and eye-opening lessons from a book that challenged a lot of what I thought I knew about raising kids: NurtureShock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman. I picked up this book because I wanted to understand what really helps children grow and thrive. The authors use real science to show that some of our most common parenting beliefs might not be true—and that’s actually good news! I hope these lessons help you feel more confident and curious as you support your kids.

10 Key Takeaways / Life Lessons

1. Praise Effort, Not Intelligence
The book shows that praising kids for being “smart” can backfire. I learned to praise effort and hard work, which helps kids become more resilient and willing to try new things.

2. Sleep Is Essential
Kids need more sleep than we think. I started making sleep a bigger priority, and I noticed my kids were happier and learned better.

3. Lying Is Normal—But Teachable
All kids lie sometimes, but honesty can be taught. I learned to talk openly about honesty and model it myself.

4. Sibling Rivalry Isn’t Fixed by Fairness Alone
Just treating kids the same doesn’t stop fights. I learned to help my kids build their own relationship, instead of always stepping in.

5. Self-Control Can Be Learned
Kids aren’t just born with self-control—they can practice and get better at it. I started using games and routines to help my kids build this skill.

6. Diversity Needs to Be Talked About
Kids notice differences, so it’s important to talk about race and diversity openly. I learned that silence can send the wrong message.

7. Teen Rebellion Is About Connection
Teens push back, but they still need strong relationships with parents. I started listening more and judging less, which helped us stay close.

8. Kids Learn from Watching Us
Children copy what we do, not just what we say. I became more mindful of my own actions and words.

9. Early Learning Isn’t Everything
Starting academics super early doesn’t guarantee success. I learned to let my kids play and explore, trusting that learning will come.

10. Curiosity Is Powerful
The biggest lesson? Asking questions and being curious helps kids (and parents!) grow. I learned to encourage questions and explore answers together.

Conclusion

Reading NurtureShock helped me let go of some old parenting myths and focus on what really matters—connection, curiosity, and kindness. I’m praising effort, making sleep a priority, and having more honest conversations with my kids. If you want to parent smarter and with more confidence, I think you’ll find this book as surprising and helpful as I did.
