Be Here Now by Ram Dass: 10 Mindful Lessons for Living in the Present

  • June 25, 2025

Hey friends! Today, I want to share some gentle and inspiring lessons from a book that helped me slow down and truly appreciate the present moment: Be Here Now by Ram Dass. I picked up this book because I wanted to feel more peaceful and connected, instead of always rushing or worrying about the future. What I found was a beautiful, spiritual guide to living with more awareness, love, and joy. Let’s chat about the 10 biggest lessons I learned, like we’re sitting together, breathing deeply, and simply being here now.

10 Key Takeaways / Life Lessons

1. The Present Moment Is All We Have
I learned that real peace and happiness come from being fully present—not stuck in the past or worried about the future, but right here, right now.

2. Let Go of Attachments
Ram Dass teaches that holding on too tightly to things, people, or ideas can make us suffer. I try to let go and trust that everything changes.

3. You Are Not Your Thoughts
Just because I think something doesn’t mean it’s true or that it defines me. I can watch my thoughts come and go, like clouds in the sky.

4. Love Is Our True Nature
At our core, we are loving and kind. When I remember this, it’s easier to treat myself and others with compassion.

5. Spiritual Practice Is for Everyone
You don’t have to be a monk or a guru to find peace. Simple things—like breathing, meditating, or being kind—can help anyone feel more connected.

6. Surrender to What Is
Instead of fighting life or trying to control everything, I learned to accept what’s happening and trust the journey.

7. Serve Others with an Open Heart
Helping others, even in small ways, brings joy and meaning. Service is a way to connect and grow.

8. Find Teachers Everywhere
Every person and experience can teach me something. I try to stay open and curious, even when things are hard.

9. Simplicity Brings Clarity
Letting go of clutter—both in my mind and in my life—helps me see what really matters.

10. Be Gentle with Yourself
Growth takes time. I remind myself to be patient, forgiving, and gentle as I learn to “be here now.”

Conclusion

Reading Be Here Now by Ram Dass helped me slow down, breathe, and appreciate the beauty of each moment. I’m more present, more loving, and more at peace with myself and the world. Now, I try to live each day with awareness and kindness, knowing that every moment is a chance to start fresh.
