It’s OK Not to Share by Heather Shumaker: 10 Gentle Lessons for Raising Confident, Authentic Kids

  • July 22, 2025

Introduction

Hey friends! I just finished reading It’s OK Not to Share by Heather Shumaker, and it completely changed how I think about kids, sharing, and social rules. I picked up this book because I wanted to raise children who are kind, confident, and true to themselves—without forcing them to follow every “rule” just because it’s expected. Heather’s advice is bold, practical, and rooted in respect for children’s real needs and feelings. Here are the biggest lessons I learned, and I hope they help you feel more relaxed and empowered as a parent too!

10 Key Takeaways / Life Lessons

1. Sharing Should Be Voluntary, Not Forced
Heather explains that real sharing comes from choice, not pressure. I’m learning to let my child decide when they’re ready to share, trusting that generosity will grow naturally.

2. Let Kids Finish Their Turn
It’s okay for children to keep playing with a toy until they’re done. I’m practicing patience and teaching my child to wait, knowing this builds respect for others’ boundaries.

3. Conflict Is a Learning Opportunity
Disagreements between kids aren’t always bad. I’m learning to step back and let children work things out, offering support only when needed.

4. Respect Children’s “No”
Kids have the right to say no—to hugs, to sharing, to play. I’m honoring my child’s boundaries and teaching them to respect others’ as well.

5. Play Is Serious Work
Heather reminds us that play is how kids learn and grow. I’m making space for unstructured, child-led play every day.

6. Don’t Rush to Rescue
It’s okay for kids to feel frustrated or sad sometimes. I’m learning to let my child experience and work through tough feelings, instead of fixing everything right away.

7. Real Apologies Come from the Heart
Forced apologies don’t teach empathy. I’m encouraging my child to apologize only when they’re ready and understand why.

8. Adults Set Limits, Kids Make Choices
I’m learning to set clear, reasonable boundaries, but also to give my child choices within those limits.

9. Emotions Are Welcome
All feelings are okay—even anger or jealousy. I’m creating a safe space for my child to express emotions without shame.

10. Trust Kids to Learn Social Skills Over Time
The biggest lesson? Kids don’t have to get everything “right” right away. I’m learning to trust the process and let my child grow into kindness and cooperation at their own pace.

Conclusion

Reading It’s OK Not to Share made me feel more confident and relaxed as a parent. I’m learning to respect my child’s boundaries, trust their natural development, and let go of unnecessary rules. If you want to raise confident, authentic kids, I hope these lessons inspire you too. We’re all learning and growing together!
